In the build up to the 31st anniversary of the World Wide Web’s public domain debut on April 30th, Forrit unveiled a report indicating that the current state of the internet could hinder the evolution of Web 3.0 and the metaverse.
The report, titled Web O.No: Your Business’ Bleak Online Future and How to Avoid It, represents findings from a survey of over 500 UK business decision makers, shedding light on the challenges in the internet landscape.
Alarmingly, 87% of respondents expressed fears that the “chaotic” state of the internet would impede the realisation of innovative technologies like Web 3.0 and the metaverse.
Key concerns highlighted by the respondents include security flaws, vulnerabilities in open-source web management systems, lack of website governance, and the prevalence of legacy CMS systems.
Despite the optimism surrounding the potential of Web 3.0 and the metaverse, none of the respondents reported having websites equipped for this new era of the internet.
Security emerged as a major area of concern, with 57% of respondents admitting to website security flaws, a factor that could erode customer trust if exposed. The vulnerability was even more pronounced among users of open-source solutions like WordPress, with a staggering 79% reporting security flaws.
The report also underscored the risks associated with outdated web management practices, such as operating multiple CMS systems. According to the report, 44% of respondents confessed to lacking control over website content due to this practice, exposing them to potential outages, dysfunctional interfaces, and hazardous content.

Respondents agreed with this, with 89% of them agreeing that composable architecture would empower their organisation to future-proof their digital infrastructure. This would include granting them the flexibility to adopt AI into the website—a capability that is inhibited by their current web management system, according to 72% of respondents

Embracing composable web architecture removes the current barriers, providing a clear pathway to the future – whether that’s the metaverse, Web 3.0, or any other pioneering tech advancement as yet undiscovered,” concluded Gary Roberts, CRO at Forrit.
